IMS president, Richard H. Rhodes, MD President's Message
John P. McGoff, MD John P. McGoff, MD, served as the 135th President of the Indianapolis Medical Society in 2008-2009.

Born and raised in the Broad Ripple area of Indianapolis, John attended St. Pius X Catholic Grade School with his five brothers and sisters. He graduated from North Central High School in 1977. When not in school or at wrestling practice, Dr. McGoff volunteered in the Wishard Hospital Emergency Department, and it is there that he decided to become a physician.

In 1980, at the age of 20, Dr. McGoff graduated from Indiana University with a degree in biology and then matriculated into the IU School of Medicine. During his third year of medical school, he joined the Medical Officer Training Corps with the Indiana National Guard and he has been serving in the military ever since. Upon completion of medical school in 1984, he performed his three-year residency in Emergency Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, including a stint as Chief Resident. There, he met a young nurse named Karen Strom, now his wife of 24 years. They have a 13-year-old daughter, Ava. After finishing his residency in 1987, John returned to Indianapolis and began working in the Emergency Department at Community Hospital, where he has since helped tens of thousands of patients from many different backgrounds.

Dr. McGoff has continued with the National Guard and has been recently confirmed by the US Senate for promotion to Brigadier General. He will become Chief of Staff for the Indiana Air National Guard effective 1 June 2010. He currently serves as the Air Guard Assistant to the United States Air Force Surgeon General at European Headquarters. Col McGoff has deployed extensively around the world with operational tours in Antarctica, Turkey, Jordan, Bahrain and Germany and has logged over 600 hours of flight time in numerous aircraft, including the F-4 and F-16. In 2001, he graduated from the Air Force's Air War College. He returned last January from a tour in Iraq, where he served as the Director of Emergency Services at the 332d EMDG, Joint Base Balad, the busiest trauma center in Iraq.

In addition to his roles as a father, physician, and colonel, Dr. McGoff remains an active member of the community in many other ways. He has served on a variety of national, state and local boards including the Board of Directors for Community Hospitals, Marion County Forensic Science Commission, Indiana Organ Procurement Organization, Indiana Brain Injury Leadership Board, President of the Indiana Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians and current Alternate Trustee to the Indiana State Medical Association.

Dr. McGoff has also been active in Republican politics in Marion County and Indiana for many years. In 1996, he was elected Marion County Coroner, serving two terms. In May 2008, he narrowly lost an election for the Republican nomination for Indiana's Fifth Congressional District.

Recycle & Raise Money for the IMS Foundation!

Your IMS Foundation/Project Health has recently joined forces with a company called Planet Green Recycling that gives organizations money in exchange for things like old cellphones, printer cartridges, Palm Pilots, GPS devices, MP3s, IPods, and small electronics, which they recycle.

Planet Green reports that they have raised $40 million dollars for charities.

It's Easy to Participate: Set up a box in your office where staff can drop in items (there must be at least 20 items). Call Carrie at 317-262-5625, or email her at carrie@imsonline.org and she will send you a prepaid UPS label.

Encourage everyone in the office to participate. Don't just throw printer cartridges in the trash when you can help not only the IMS Foundation, but the environment as well. Large laser printer cartridges cannot be accepted.

Take a look at their website: planetgreenrecycle.com/imsonline

Contact CMS As Soon As Possible To Obtain an Exemption from the 2012 EPrescribing

The AMA has yet again secured an opportunity for more physicians to be exempted from the 2012 Medicare e-prescribing penalty. Even if you have already contacted CMS, contact CMS again. They are willing to hear your case.

The AMA has continually raised concerns with CMS that the back-dating of the 2012 e-prescribing penalty program along with the multiple other quality and health IT programs underway left little time for a significant number of physicians to take the necessary steps to avoid the 2012 e-prescribing penalty.

CMS has completed its review of all hardship exemption requests for the 2012 e-prescribing penalty program received via CMS' Communication Support Page.

If you have not already done so, please contact CMS' Quality Net Help Desk immediately if you have not received a formal notice from CMS regarding the final status of your exemption request or if you believe you are receiving the 2012 e-prescribing penalty in error. The Quality Net Help Desk can be reached via telephone at 1-866-288-8912 or via email at Qnetsupport@sdps.org.

Acumen

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, it may be the right time for you to consider other health insurance alternatives. Indianapolis Medical Society is pleased to continue to offer its members a discount on group health insurance through ADVANTAGE HEALTH SOLUTIONS, a local health plan owned by local providers.

IMS physician practices are benefiting from this discount and the move to ADVANTAGE. The IMS employee group composed of the combined 19 employees of IMS, the Medical Society Exchange and the IMS Foundation, will save more than $200,000 over two years compared to its old Anthem BCBS premiums. Although every situation is different and there is no guarantee of savings, we hope that these actual results to date are compelling enough for you to consider taking advantage of this unique opportunity.

To find out more about the program, or to see if it is a good fit for your practice, please contact the exclusive agents for this product's IMS discount: Call (317) 564-4003, or click here to visit Acumen's website.

About IMS

The Indianapolis Medical Society was established in 1848. We are a professional membership organization for all licensed Doctors of Medicine and Doctors of Osteopathy in the Indianapolis area. Our offices are located at 631 E. New York St., Indianapolis, IN 46202-3706; our office hours are 8:00 to 4:30, Monday through Friday.

We are well known as producers of our Pictorial Roster of Members, or the "funny book" as nurses in hospitals throughout Central Indiana refer to it! The Roster is the most highly regarded referral source in Indianapolis and surrounding areas. We encourage all physicians in Central Indiana to become members of our prestigious organization to be included in this indispensable referral source. If you are interested in getting your message before our 2,000 physician members (as well as those members of the public who purchase the remainder of the 4,000 Rosters we print each year), please let us hear from you. We are eager to share our surprisingly low advertising rates.

If you are a physician and want additional information on becoming a member of our organization, please call (317) 639-3406 or E-Mail us: ims@imsonline.org.

If you are a member of the general public and want to know if your physician is a member of Indianapolis Medical Society, or if you would like education information on your personal physician, please call (317) 639-3406 or E-Mail us: ims@imsonline.org.

We also provide referrals to physicians if you are new to our area or simply seeking a change of physicians.

Additionally, our Commission on Professional Affairs reviews concerns from patients who might have questions about whether or not their treatment was ethical or appropriate.
